Why “Focus on the Bright Side” Isn’t Helpful Advice

There are so many memes and quotes out there that say, “Be positive, not negative. Focus on the bright side.” I’ve never been very good at ignoring the negatives and focusing on the positives.

Call me a critical, over-analytical over-thinker if you want, but at no point in my journey of self-love and self-discovery have I learned to ignore all my flaws, all my mistakes, all my regrets. At no point in my journey of compassion have I learned to ignore all the times that someone has hurt me or all the destruction caused by abuse. That never felt right to me. And you know something? It hasn’t actually been necessary.

Rewind to six years ago when I was staring at my makeupless face in the mirror. My thoughts said, “Ugly. Horrible. Pale. Look at those blemishes. Look at those hairs. Disgusting. Revolting. Put a bag over your head and hide.” But I kept looking.

I couldn’t unsee those blemishes. There they were. I couldn’t unsee those hairs. There they were too. Plain as day. I also couldn’t stop myself from thinking that these were disgusting and revolting. Those thoughts were certainly there too! And no amount of positive self-talk was going to make them go away.

What happened next was fascinating. In addition to observing those hairs, those blemishes, and those thoughts, I saw something else. I saw my face as pure visual information—the way I’d perceive the colors and shapes in an abstract painting. I was giving my face meaning, and I was seeing it as something meaningless.

Those moments revolutionized my relationship with myself. I didn’t erase my negative self-image. I just added a new perspective. That new perspective balanced my view of myself.

I think balance is a key word. What bothers me about the whole “be positive, ignore the negatives” idea is that I was abused by some very mentally unstable people in my childhood who did that very thing. They refused to see how they hurt others. They focused only on their good intentions.

A certain amount of self-criticism, self-judgment, and self-doubt is absolutely essential. It’s what makes us apologize for hurting someone. It’s what makes us improve the areas of our lives that are lacking. It’s what makes us question idealistic, romanticized notions of the world and see things clearly. The so-called “dark side” is essential. It isn’t bad at all.

A few years ago, my partner and I were in an argument. He was very angry, and the way he was expressing his anger to me was extremely triggering. I felt victimized, oppressed, disgusted. I thought, “I would never do this to you.”

But then, something happened. Beneath his unhelpful delivery, I saw something. I saw him trying to communicate something about my behavior toward him. Something that hurt me to see. A huge blow to my ego. And he was trying to tell me about it. He was trying to say, “I don’t do this to you.”

Sure, he wasn’t communicating about it well. But he was communicating something important. We ended the conversation temporarily and went to our separate corners.

Alone, shame and self-hatred suddenly returned to me, like old friends who don’t bother to knock. My thoughts said, you’re a horrible human being. Look what you’ve done to your boyfriend. Look at how patient he’s been all this time with your intolerable actions, and look at how you treated him for trying to tell you about it.

Extreme. It was all so extreme. And I couldn’t delete the extremism! I couldn’t remove my self-judgment, and I couldn’t remove my resentment for his angry words. All I could do was find balance.

I told myself that just because I had made mistakes doesn’t mean I’m a horrible person. I told myself that I could acknowledge that I had room to grow and also respect myself as a human being. I could do both.

As for him, I could admit that he had something valuable to say and that his communication needed some work. I could see our argument as something that contained pain alongside valuable feedback. It wasn’t good or bad. It was both. It was neither. It just was.

These moments pop up for me all the time. Last month, when I was travelling, I had something stolen. I felt betrayed, angry, lost. I didn’t try to stop all those feelings, but I also didn’t stop with feeling them. I continued to explore my experience until I found new perspectives on the situation. So being robbed turned into an amazing learning experience! Not because I ignored the pain but because I balanced that pain with lessons.

Life is paradoxical. Where there’s joy, there’s sadness. Where there is control, there is surrender. Where there is speech, there is silence. Where there’s destruction, there is growth. We do not need to ignore the so-called dark side. It’s an essential part of the way things are. We only need to add an awareness of the other side: what we call the “light.”

I think this is especially important in these times of political and social unrest. When we try to replace darkness with light, red with blue, wrong with right, we create war. Because what we call dark and wrong exists for a reason. Sometimes, it exists because it is meant to serve us in some way. Sometimes, it exists because it’s a symptom of some bigger issue.

No matter how much we try to triumph over and defeat our enemies (including our inner enemies), if we do not understand where they come from, they will keep returning in different forms. We need to wage peace, not war, and peace comes from understanding.

My perfectionism, which destroyed me for many years, was not a malignant tumor to cut out of my experience. It is a helpful pattern. Sure, it doesn’t help when I’m looking at my face or my mistakes. But as I’ve learned to embrace the art of continuously perfecting something (without ever expecting it to be perfect), I’ve become a better writer and a better editor.

My self-judgment, which almost brought me to an early death, was not a disease. It was overgrown, but it wasn’t unnecessary. My ability to look critically at things helps me expand my perspectives, open my mind, and understand people better. My ability to look critically at myself helps me work on myself, admit my mistakes, and constantly improve.

My bouts of intense, debilitating self-loathing weren’t useless either. They always had a message. Sometimes, I hadn’t taken a break in months. Sometimes, I was ignoring my own needs while codependently following the desires of the people around me. Sometimes, I had allowed my anxiety to spiral endlessly for weeks and weeks, and my mind had just become tired. I realize now that, in my suicidal moments, I didn’t really want to die. I just wanted to rest. I wanted a break from it all.

I’ve learned that there is no good or bad. There is only what is most helpful and useful at the time. The answers, as they say, are all within you. They are. And this also means that, in any given situation, some of your inner answers will be more appropriate than others. Everything has its time and place. Everything is a valuable part of your experience.

This doesn’t mean we should condone rape, murder, or violence. But this attitude can help us understand these tragic occurrences more than judgment can. Why do some people feel like the right answer is to hurt someone else? I think this line of questioning will bring us to a more helpful place than calling those people heartless monsters. It can actually help us work toward solving those social issues.

And learning to look at ourselves and, instead of asking, “How can I get rid of this horrible part of me? How can I stop doing this unhelpful thing?” We can instead ask, “What could this mean? Which needs might I be meeting with my actions, and how could I meet those needs in a way that serves me more?” We can focus on holistically understanding why something has happened and allowing ourselves to explore different, new solutions to the puzzles of our existence.

I suppose what I’ve learned over the past six years has been more than self-love. I’ve learned balance. I’ve learned that real happiness is being unafraid of my emotions. I can be sad, angry, happy. I can feel it all, whenever it comes, and know that I won’t get stuck on it. I will let myself experience all the available emotions, and then I will come to peace.

Instead of trying to focus on the bright side, my task is to let myself see all the sides, remove my judgment about what they mean, and try to appreciate the complexity of my experiences.

That is the power we have as human beings. We can let ourselves be curious instead of always fearful. We can choose to work on understanding who we are instead of always trying to be who we think we should be. We can let ourselves see what is there and not only what we are used to seeing. We can choose to understand better. We can choose to be aware.

Have you registered for the PARACON – Quester’s Fall Conference – at 100 Mile House BC?  One of the attractions at the conference is focusing around ghost hunters and a ghost walk.

I began wondering if there were other locations in Canada that had well known, haunted sites.  I found a great website called Haunted Places (https://www.hauntedplaces.org/).  This site focuses mainly on US haunted sites.  However, I started plugging in cities in Canada and I found listings for different cities. The information below comes from the Haunted Places site.

When you go to the site to find more sites and the addresses for the various locations, be aware that you need click on the tab for REGION, and choose CANADA and then the province that you want to check out.  When you expand the haunted event, you can pull up information on street address and hours available if it is a public place.

The City of Calgary

While I knew that we had lots of haunted sites in Calgary, I was stunned by the number of sites and the diversity of the legends.

Calgary StampedeLegend has it that the famous Calgary Stampede is haunted by a construction worker who was killed when he fell into wet concrete while the grandstand was being built. Folks have heard footsteps at night, seen doors close by themselves, and noticed water and electricity coming on when no one is around.

Fairmont Palliser HotelThe 1914 Fairmont Palliser Hotel, Calgary’s oldest, is home to some ghosts, as guests have reported after seeing spectral figures walking in the hallways.

Bow Valley Ranche RestaurantBow Valley Ranche Restaurant was built over a century ago and is haunted. The ghost is believed to be Charlie Yuen, a former chef who perished in a car accident in 1938, and whose dying wish was to be buried near the restaurant where he had been employed all his life. Although he was buried in China, his ghost has been seen in the private dining room. Lights and the stereo have been known to come on by themselves as well.

Mark’s Work Warehouse – At this department store chain Mark’s Work Wearhouse location, staff members have reported shadows in the store and in empty dressing rooms, heard footsteps, smelled a wet-dog smell, and felt cold chills. Objects have been moved or tossed, and all these event usually occur before the store opens or after it closes.

Deane House – This is the first Canadian residence added to the website, and is also believed to be one of the most haunted. While the historic building was a boarding house, it was the scene of many murders. The apparition of a ghostly man who was gunned down on the front porch has been seen by visitors., as well as a man missing his legs in a hallway on the ground floor of the building. In Mr Deane’s study, the apparition of a gentleman in period clothing has been seen smoking a cigar. Ghostly laughter is heard, cold spots are felt and a piano in a room on the second floor plays by itself. A female guest to the house recently partook in a murder mystery recreational activity, and in the basement saw he apparition of a native American Indian man, who screamed at her till she fled. Paranormal investigators have discovered that the house was also built over a sacred burial ground.

My own experience at Deane House was similar to the description above.  The social club at the company that I worked for at the time, booked dinner and a murder mystery evening at Deane House for the staff and spouses.  We had some free time between courses to explore the house.  When two of us went to the basement to see the wine storage, we were spooked by the sounds of drums and voices, and the smell of smoke.

Vancouver and Victoria and Area

There are an amazing number of haunted sites listed on the website for British Columbia.  Check them out!  After the conference, we will be able to add 100 Mile House and area.

Helmcken House- Victoria – Helmcken House was the home of Dr. John Sebastian Helmcken, first speaker of an elected assembly in BC, who lived there from 1853 to 1920. Cecelia Helmcken is suspected to be the ghost who haunts it; ghostly piano playing is heard along with occasional pranks.

Washington Avenue Grill in Whiterock – Two ghosts are said to visit Washington Avenue Grill: one, a young woman who died in a car accident in front of the establishment, and two, her beau, who committed suicide out of grief upon losing her. It is said that the woman’s ghost comes out of the cemetery next door and walks through the restaurant, and the man’s ghost is known for touching customers and workers. The site was featured on the show Creepy Canada.

Central Park in Burnaby – Ghostly activity in Central Park in Burnaby includes that of a little boy near the lake and a young lady near Swangard Stadium who searches for her lost children. The boy disappears upon being noticed, and the 1930s-era lady may speak garbled words. Other spirits have been seen in the forest.

Old Spaghetti Warehouse-Vancouver – The ghost of a train conductor visits the Old Spaghetti Factory Italian restaurant, according to local legend. He is said to have perished in an underground railway accident decades ago involving the very trolley car that’s on display in the restaurant.

There are so many haunted sites, I could go on and on – about sites in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec.  And, I know that there are many sites to be added.  If you read the sites and have an experience to share, then, provide the experience to Haunted Places and they will share your adventure.

At Questers, we are excited about the Ghost Tour on an old section of the old Cariboo Wagon Road, which is situated on the Spruce Hill property, for our Fall Conference at 100 Mile House BC.  Check out the information at Facebook – because we are doing something different this year for our annual Questers’ Fall Conference by returning to 100 Mile House area to team up Dave Scott “Spaced Out Radio” (www.spacedoutradio.com) and hold a joint Questers/Spaced Out Radio Paracon Conference (www.facebook.com/CaribooParacon).

To get everyone thinking about ghosts and ghostly haunts, check out the TV show called “Most Haunted”.  The following excerpt from the HiggyPop website (https://www.higgypop.com/news/most-haunted-north-west/) gives a short write up of the show…

Since Yvette Fielding and her team of ghost hunters first appeared on our televisions in 2002, they’ve visited hundreds of haunted locations around the country, including a total of 45 episodes filmed in the North West.

The North West is a hotbed for paranormal activity and is the area from which the team have brought us some of the most memorable episodes of the show, including the 2017 Halloween special at Croxteth Hall in Liverpool.

Check out the list of “Most Haunted” locations in the North West, on the website.  IT IS amazing how many haunted locations there are.

And, check out the Questers Fall Conference Flyer, below.

The greatest goal you can set this year is to make peace with your life, no matter your circumstances. These 10 powerful insights from Eckhart Tolle will get you started.

• Don’t seek happiness. If you seek it, you won’t find it, because seeking is the antithesis of happiness. Happiness is ever elusive, but freedom from unhappiness is attainable now, by facing what is rather than making up stories about it.

• The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it. Be aware of the thoughts you are thinking. Separate them from the situation, which is always neutral, which always is as it is. There is the situation or the fact, and here are my thoughts about it. Instead of making up stories, stay with the facts. For example, “I am ruined” is a story. It limits you and prevents you from taking effective action. “I have 50 cents left in my bank account” is a fact. Facing facts is always empowering.

• See if you can catch the voice in your head, perhaps in the very moment it complains about something, and recognize it for what it is: the voice of the ego, no more than a thought. Whenever you notice that voice, you will also realize that you are not the voice, but the one who is aware of it. In fact, you are the awareness that is aware of the voice. In the background, there is the awareness. In the foreground, there is the voice, the thinker. In this way you are becoming free of the ego, free of the unobserved mind.

• Wherever you look, there is plenty of circumstantial evidence for the reality of time—a rotting apple, your face in the bathroom mirror compared with your face in a photo taken 30 years ago—yet you never find any direct evidence, you never experience time itself. You only ever experience the present moment.

• Why do anxiety, stress, or negativity arise? Because you turned away from the present moment. And why did you do that? You thought something else was more important. One small error, one misperception, creates a world of suffering.

• People believe themselves to be dependent on what happens for their happiness. They don’t realize that what happens is the most unstable thing in the universe. It changes constantly. They look upon the present moment as either marred by something that has happened and shouldn’t have or as deficient because of something that has not happened but should have. And so they miss the deeper perfection that is inherent in life itself, a perfection that lies beyond what is happening or not happening. Accept the present moment and find the perfection that is untouched by time.

• The more shared past there is in a relationship, the more present you need to be; otherwise, you will be forced to relive the past again and again.

• Equating the physical body with “I,” the body that is destined to grow old, wither, and die, always leads to suffering. To refrain from identifying with the body doesn’t mean that you no longer care for it. If it is strong, beautiful, or vigorous, you can appreciate those attributes—while they last. You can also improve the body’s condition through nutrition and exercise. If you don’t equate the body with who you are, when beauty fades, vigor diminishes, or the body becomes incapacitated, this will not affect your sense of worth or identity in any way. In fact, as the body begins to weaken, the light of consciousness can shine more easily.

• You do not become good by trying to be good, but by finding the goodness that is already within you and allowing that goodness to emerge. If peace is really what you want, then you will choose peace.

Picture of Bach Rescue Remedy in all its forms

I first heard of Bach Rescue Remedy from a friend and neighbour.  I came back from the Philippines with an illness that turned out to be a form of malaria, and I was sick!  With sickness comes feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and reclusiveness.   Sally promised me that if I tried Rescue Remedy, I would start to feel different and better in a week.  I went and bought a bottle of the drops.  My house has never been without it since.

Here are some of the Rescue miracles.  Most involve one to five drops on the tongue.

This sounds like a pretty interesting product, doesn’t it?

Well, Dr. Bach created a whole system of remedies like this one, called The Bach Flower Remedy System.  The System includes many remedies in addition to the Rescue Remedy which is also called “The traditional crisis remedy”.  The following comes from the Bach Centre website – http://www.bachcentre.com/index.php.

It (the Rescue Remedy)  is the most famous of the remedies, but in fact is not ‘a remedy’ at all. Instead it’s a blend of five different remedies:

  • Rock Rose
  • Impatiens
  • Cherry Plum
  • Star of Bethlehem
  • Clematis

This mix was created by Dr Bach to deal with emergencies and crises – the moments when there is no time to make a proper individual selection of remedies. It can be used to help us get through any stressful moments, from last-minute exam nerves to the aftermath of an accident.

There is a complete list of the original Bach Remedies, what they are, and how to take them, on the Bach Centre website.  Check it out, and let me know what your favorite remedy is.

Walk in Peace!

Note for Readers:

The following article is an excerpt from  “Take a Mindful Moment: 5 Simple Practices for Daily Life” by By Parneet Pal, Carley Hauck, Elisha Goldstein, Kyra Bobinet and Cara Bradley | May 10, 2018 from the blog on Mindful.Org.  To read the rest of this article, go to https://www.mindful.org/take-a-mindful-moment-5-simple-practices-for-daily-life/.  Reprinted under the Creative Commons Sharing License.

Wakeup: Start with a Purpose

Intention refers to the underlying motivation for everything we think, say, or do. From the brain’s perspective, when we act in unintended ways, there’s a disconnect between the faster, unconscious impulses of the lower brain centers and the slower, conscious, wiser abilities of the higher centers like the pre-frontal cortex.

Given that the unconscious brain is in charge of most of our decision-making and behaviors, this practice can help you align your conscious thinking with a primal emotional drive that the lower centers care about. Beyond safety, these include motivations like reward, connection, purpose, self-identity and core values.

Setting an intention—keeping those primal motivations in mind—helps strengthen this connection between the lower and higher centers. Doing so can change your day, making it more likely that your words, actions and responses— especially during moments of difficulty—will be more mindful and compassionate.

This practice is best done first thing in the morning, before checking phones or email.

1. On waking, sit in your bed or a chair in a relaxed posture. Close your eyes and connect with the sensations of your seated body. Make sure your spine is straight, but not rigid.

2. Take three long, deep, nourishing breaths—breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Then let your breath settle into its own rhythm, as you simply follow it in and out, noticing the rise and fall of your chest and belly as you breathe.

3. Ask yourself: “What is my intention for today?” Use these prompts to help answer that question, as you think about the people and activities you will face. Ask yourself:

How might I show up today to have the best impact?

What quality of mind do I want to strengthen and develop?

What do I need to take better care of myself?

During difficult moments, how might I be more compassionate to others and myself?

How might I feel more connected and fulfilled?

4. Set your intention for the day. For example, “Today, I will be kind to myself; be patient with others; give generously; stay grounded; persevere; have fun; eat well,” or anything else you feel is important.

5. Throughout the day, check in with yourself. Pause, take a breath, and revisit your intention. Notice, as you become more and more conscious of your intentions for each day, how the quality of your communications, relationships, and mood shifts.

Saying good-bye to a home or space is an important part of moving forward. It gives us a sense of completion.

When we move from one residence to another, we often get so caught up in the forward thrust of where we are going that we forget to properly say good-bye to the home we are leaving behind. Yet saying good-bye is an important part of moving forward. It gives us a sense of completion so that we are able to fully inhabit our new space, having left nothing of ourselves behind in the old one. In this way, we honor the space that has held and nurtured us. At the same time, we cleanse it and empty it of our energy so that the new residents can make the space theirs.

Plan a walk through your home that begins and ends at the front door. Ideally, you will be alone or accompanied only by a person who shared the space with you. Prepare yourself mentally to be as present as you can during this process. As you enter the house, you might say, “I have come to thank you for being my home and to say goodbye.” You might touch the walls with your hands as you move through the house, or you might burn sage as an offering, as well as an energy cleanser.

Spend some time in each room expressing your gratitude and gathering or releasing any lingering energy from the room. As you do this, you are freeing your home to embrace its new occupants. Remember to visit your outside spaces as well. Plants are especially sensitive to the energy around them and will appreciate your consideration.

As you make your way back to the front door, know that you have completed your final journey through your home and that you have honored and blessed it with this ritual of farewell. As you close and lock the door behind you, say one last good-bye. Now you can walk freely into your future and fully inhabit the new spaces that will keep you safe and warm.

Go in peace.

Editor’s Note:  This beautiful article was in an email that a friend sent to me.  Therefore, the original writer and article’s origin is not known.

The various astrologers and mystics have been writing about the January 31 2018 Full Moon Eclipse – saying that it is the start of a nineteen (19) year cycle.  The eclipses  are karmic timers that signify a change in fate and destiny.  In this particular 19 year cycle, we will each need to deal with love, relationships, and our natural, spiritual gifts.  Most of us have been awakening, and now is the time to “be awake”, to learn how to use the gifts for the greatest and highest good.  Don’t worry, your teachers will arrive when you need them, and then will leave you.  You must do all the work.

Knowing that big changes are happening has made me think about what we all need in our lives, and that is support.  As I was musing about this, a blog that I wrote back in 2009 came to mind and I thought it was worth sharing at this time.

Go in peace.

Pairing Up and Paring Down

image

“Winter wonderland” – copyright S. Roger Joyeux, and used with permission.

As I walked out in the park this morning with the dogs, the first thing that caught our attention were two deer walking slowly down the path at the far edge of the park, about one-half mile from where we were entering.  They were content, grazing as they went.  There was a peacefulness to their journey.

Then as we walked down in to the river flood plane, two eagles flew up and down the river. One finally came to the tree top directly across the river from us.  The other eagle circled, watching us and watching the geese, and looking for the fish that would come close to the surface.  Again, there was a serenity to the scene that makes the moment a blessing.

Quite often, our walks are “walking meditations” for me.  As I walked, I reflected that even the two chickadees that we saw were a pair.  The ducks that flew up seemed to be in twos.  The sense was of a “Noah’s Ark” effect.

One of the thoughts that passed through my mind was that in order to hold our balance through the upheavals that will be happening, we each will need someone – a partner who will anchor us as we will anchor them.  To help maintain the balance, we will need to let go of many things – material things.  That process has already been started in the US where people are having to walk away from houses full of furniture for financial reasons.  At the same time, by letting go and paring down, these people are opening up space to accept new energy that will take them beyond the consumer infection that the corporate world has been pushing for the last fifteen years.

As we pare down and let go, many of the energy blockages that have kept us from being happy – we were so busy consuming that we did not realize what happiness was – will dissolve.  Life will be simpler.

Background

In mid February, Jacquelyn Rose, current Questers President,  asked all participants in Goran’s hands on healing post-conference workshop at the Fall Conference 2017, to share any notable or dramatic benefits you received from his transmissions?

For those of you that didn’t attend, here is what was scheduled to happen in the workshop on Sunday afternoon.

GORAN RAPAIC, Workshop

Demonstration of some of the Goran’s unique healing techniques; Learning and experiencing power of energy healing and power of self-healing; Sharing some of Goran’s own healing experiences. Sharing the  ancient secrets and wisdom from the powerful Toltec tradition. Powerful group meditation. Through this meditation and with Goran’s energy support people will also experience a higher state of consciousness, creating a safe, calm and beautiful space within.

In addition, everyone will receive a powerful healing session from Goran. This workshop will also benefit anyone who is experiencing chronic pain or illness.

The responses to Jacqui’s request are now starting to come in.  Our first responder about his healing experience is Fred Greef.  Thank you, Fred, for sharing your experience.  Here is his story.

My Goran’s Healing Experience

imageI got immense bliss and laughter while driving home to Olympia, Washington the day after Goran’s healing session. I could not stop laughing for first half of the drive. The intense laughter was very emotionally healing. I got inspiration to send love to all the water, snow, people, and vehicles and human structures that I saw while driving home, as well as to all trees and plants and animals. I mentally used my sacred blue water to send the love, and mentally put my sacred water in all the waterbodies, streams and snow that I saw.

After most laughter had passed, it still revved up again (big time) whenever I saw water or snow and sent the love and sacred blue water to it. I still get an intense rush of bliss from mentally healing (sending love and my sacred blue water to) water and snow, whenever I see any while driving anywhere.

I am very grateful and blessed to have met Goran and received his help.

Peace and Bliss,

Fred

“What advice would you give to a new manager starting out a new job in a new company?”  That was the question that was posed to me by a young friend over coffee.  My first question was, “Do you have a new job?”

The response was, “Not yet, but I hope that I will, soon.”

I thought about the question for a while.  Then I said that my best advice to a new manager is – don’t underestimate those around you.

The biggest mistake that I see many managers, leaders, or executives make is that they under estimate their staff and they over estimate what they know and their own importance.  I think that can be said of many people in life in general.

As parents, many of us underestimate our children’s ability to comprehend what is going on around them, and we underestimate what they need from us.  As children, we underestimate our parents’ intelligence and understanding of life.  As friends and neighbors, we underestimate the importance that we have in each other’s life.  We are the support unit, the community, and the social norm.

Going back to my example of under estimating the staff – so often it is the quiet person at their desk, shoveling their way through mounds of paper – invoices, statements, requests for proposals, etc. that have the greatest grasp of what actually happens in the office and who actually does the work (and who doesn’t) and who knows which people you can count on in a crisis.  It is knowing all these things that will make someone a better manager.  Sometimes though, you need extra help.  Don’t underestimate who can give it to you.

One day an old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he’s lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old German Shepherd thinks, ‘Oh, oh! I’m in deep doo-doo now!’ Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, ‘Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder, if there are any more around here?’

Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. ‘Whew!’ says the panther, ‘That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!’

Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the panther. So, off he goes.

The squirrel soon catches up with the panther, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the panther.

The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says, ‘Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine!

Now, the old German Shepherd sees the panther coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, ‘What am I going to do now?’, but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says…

“Where’s that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another panther!”

Moral of this story … Don’t mess with the old dogs…. Age and treachery will always overcome youth and ambition!

BS and brilliance only come with age and experience.

Go in peace.

SPIRITUAL DOWSING
AND THE
SIMPLE BLESSING PROCESS

By Joey Korn

Many people ask me, “What is it that you
do? What is this dowsing all about? What
does finding a place to drill a water well have
to do with being spiritual?” For me, dowsing
or “divining” is not just about finding a place to drill a well or about
finding anything in the physical world. It’s about detecting energy. It’s
about tapping into our own God-given ability to explore the unseen
world of subtle energies that are everywhere within and around us. It’s
about drawing ever closer to the Divine in our lives.

I use dowsing to validate and demonstrate that the blessing process
works. I consider the blessing process to be the most powerful Force in
the universe, and everyone has this Force at their disposal—at their
beckoned call. But we must call. We must initiate the process to use
this Force. It’s more than just recognizing the blessings we have in life
and expressing gratitude for them, though this too is important. We
must call on whatever we consider the Divine to bless us if we want to
use this Force that is ever-present in our lives.

We’re Always Changing the Energies

I help people understand what is going on energetically, behind the
scenes in life. We are always changing the subtle energies within and
around us, with every thought, action and emotion. With our negative
thoughts, actions and emotions, we’re changing the energies within and
around us to be detrimental, without even realizing that we are doing it!
When we get angry, fearful, or vengeful, we’re actually defining
frequencies of the energies that we fill and surround ourselves with.  This is what I call “negative blessings.” Not only do we do negative
blessings, but we also dwell on them, we indulge in them, and we tell
others about them. With positive thoughts, actions and emotions, we
fill and surround ourselves with beneficial, healing subtle energies.
And you can find and experience all these energies with dowsing! (I
use L-rods to detect and explore these energies.) Sadly, most of us are
doing more negative blessings than positive blessings.

Our Creator has set it up, under Universal Law, that the energies
within and around us are always reflecting us back to us, and we attract
what we focus on. This gives us a better understanding of expressions
like, “What you put out comes back to you,” or “What you sow, so shall
you reap.” By understanding that this is taking place, day in and day
out, we can take charge of the process with the blessing process.

Taking Charge of the Process

I first realized that I could use prayer and blessing to change
energies in 1996. I had been taught by other dowsers to use different
devices and techniques to block, divert or neutralize detrimental
energies—to keep them from affecting my family in our home. It
occurred to me one day that I could just say a prayer and ask the Divine
to change the detrimental energies into beneficial energies, and I could
tell that it worked immediately by dowsing before and after the
blessings. Any detrimental subtle energy that we can find with dowsing
can be made beneficial with a blessing. It’s all about
intent.

I soon learned that most of us have imbalances in our human energy
patterns, a pattern or matrix of energies connected to each one of us.  These imbalances are related to our struggles and strains in life—our
life issues and health concerns. Imbalances in our lives manifest as
imbalances in our own patterns. The imbalances in our patterns dowse
as detrimental energies, and we imprint these energies as we go through
life, especially around our beds. Our imbalances also extend out into
our homes and offices as detrimental Earth energies. A properly stated
blessing over ourselves, asking for healing and balance, immediately
changes these detrimental energies into beneficial energies, bringing  balance to our imbalances. Blessing ourselves and our loved ones also
changes the energies that we imprint and extend in our living
environments, because, again, these energies are constantly reflecting
us back to us. They’re our energetic mirrors.

The energy changes we make with blessing are not permanent; they
will change as we change. That’s why it’s important to keep blessing
yourself and those you live with. Better yet, get them to bless
themselves.

Simplifying the Blessing Process

Through the years, my blessings got longer and more specific, as I
included more and more in them. I asked the Divine Forces to bless me  and/or to charge me with energy to bring healing and balance into my
life and to help me attract what I most desired in life. I also blessed
others and taught others to bless themselves.

Over time, I shared my blessings with thousands of people through
my book, in person, and through my Web site. Many had learned my
blessings and were saying them regularly, especially over themselves,
but I could often tell with dowsing that the blessings weren’t balancing
their energy patterns, and that is key. I would get them to repeat the
blessings they were saying over themselves, and invariably, they had
unknowingly changed the wording and intent of the blessings in ways
that deactivated them. I decided to simplify the blessing process so it
would be easier, not only to memorize the
blessing, but also to learn and to understand
the process.

So I broke the blessing into five basic
component parts and developed what I call
the Simple Blessing Process. The first three
components activate the blessing and define
the energies; they make the blessing work the
way we want it to. The next two are for us.  It is important for us to feel gratitude, but
God, whatever God Is, does not need our
gratitude. God needs nothing. However our
Creator desires us to activate the Forces—to co-create. Finally, closing
the blessing with something like “Amen” is an act of faith. You
acknowledge that you are turning your blessing request over to a Higher
Power by closing the blessing. So here are the five components of the
Simple Blessing Process.

1) Address the Divine in whatever way you’re comfortable with.
2) Ask to be blessed and/or charged with energy.
3) Define a purpose, which can be general or specific. I suggest both.
4) Express gratitude.
5) Close your blessing.

[Following] is an example of the Simple Blessing Process. You can
say it over yourself, over others, over objects you wear, or over
whatever you eat and drink. You can bless others remotely, and the  Simple Blessing Process will balance their energy patterns, wherever
they happen to be. You can even say it over empty space, such as
where you might spend a lot of time, or over your entire home, and
you’ll change the energies there. When you say this blessing, you are
charging yourself or whomever or whatever you bless with beneficial
energy at exactly the frequency defined by your intent.

Dear God (or however you address the Divine)
Please bless me and charge me with energy
To bring healing and balance to my complete being,
Physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
* (Optional. See below)
Thank you.
Amen.

*This is where you can add something specific, such as:

“Especially to help me…” resolve a particular issue, heal a condition,
or achieve a goal.

Learning and Using the Simple Blessing Process

I suggest you learn this blessing process and use it. Say it often,
with feeling. Integrate it into your throughout-each-day life. Say it
routinely, at least twice a day, such as when you wake up and when you
go to bed. Then say it again whenever you catch yourself stressing
about anything, or angry, or sad. Remember that our negative thoughts
and emotions are negative blessings and they will bring detrimental
energies into our beings and into our living environments. Let your
negative blessings be reminders to bless yourself and whomever or
whatever you’re stressing about.

Keeping your own human energy pattern balanced and beneficial
helps you make more appropriate mental and emotional responses to
your issues in life, thereby helping to resolve your issues and achieve
your goals. It also helps you feel better and heal. And it goes farther
than that.

Keeping your own energy pattern balanced and beneficial not only
helps you, but it also brings balance to the patterns of others, just by  you being in their presence. Our energy patterns connect and merge
together when we share space with others. I have found that if four
people with balanced energy patterns are in a room together, their
balanced energies will totally balance a fifth person’s pattern, as well as
detrimental Earth energies in that room, such as those related to
underground streams. With larger groups of people, if 76% of the
people, on average, balance their human energy patterns with the
Simple Blessing Process, it will automatically balance the patterns of
the other 24%, and any detrimental Earth energies in that room will also
come into balance. I’ve demonstrated this many times in talks and
workshops, and you can learn to observe and experience this for
yourself with dowsing. We truly are One.

Integrate the Simple Blessing Process into your throughout-each-day
life and you’ll see your life changing. You’ll feel better, you’ll resolve
your issues more effectively, and you’ll feel more in charge of your life.
You’ll also be helping those you live with and spend time with. Keep
blessing yourself and you’ll draw ever closer to your highest potential,
ever closer to the Divine.

For those of you that have asked questions about how to set your intentions for a new year, I would like to share a beautiful ritual that one of my friends sent to me several years ago.

I do not use this at New Years, however, this ritual is certainly right for that purpose.   I do use it to set intentions for any time.  It is powerful to use this ritual with the New Moon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the initial technique – Setting Your Intentions for 2018 or any other time:
You start by asking yourself 4 questions…
  1. What do I want this year in my personal life
  2. What do I want this year for my financial life
  3. What do I want this year for my business life
  4. What do I want this year for my spiritual life
Then you write your answers. I feel into my body to identify in my heart what I am being drawn to create from the year. The MOST IMPORTANT part is to write it as if it has already happened.
As an example / template, here is an excerpt in part of what Maureen Collins (an artist) wrote for the category of business:
I am so grateful that this year became such an amazing journey of openness and discovery in my business, as it moved into the corporate world and lecture stage larger than ever before. I was able to deliver my shared vision via “What If? The Movie” through divine energy to hundreds of thousands of souls that were not only open to the information but contributed to the content collectively… AND they further delivered it to many more through word of mouth. This wisdom known to us all was a huge success with so many experiencing heart felt shifts and changes through the material offered by many like-minded souls. It became a place of safety and conversation for all who viewed it, and grew to include new audiences of those opening to the materials being offered by me and other contributors. The opportunity for the community to converse with one another about their own positive belief and pattern changes was a blessing and a joy to my heart, showing me the possibilities for all communities of the world. I loved watching and hearing the shifts and changes clients and friends and family were experiencing as they also awakened to how amazing and powerful they truly are, and reveled in the moments they shared with others in the community …which triggered more openings and shifts and more sharing and so on. What fun… and so effortless and flowing… I felt like a kid again with all the discoveries…
You get the idea… write it as if it has already happened AND makes sure you include how you “felt” when it happened. Do this for each of the categories (there may be some overlap but the categories are designed to allow for specifics in those four areas of your life). This is a POWERFUL exercise that almost acts as plan for the year but flows through and creates a vibrational resonance with what you are desiring. You can do this over the next couple of days… I promise you it will really make a lovely impact. Then print it out post a couple of copies in places you will regularly see them to remind you what you are creating.
Ritual:  Burn and Release from Maureen Collins…
On a sheet of paper, I write out all of the things from the current year that I’ve outgrown, no longer want in my life,  no longer work for me, and anything else I feel I want to shed and leave behind.  On a separate piece of paper, I write all of the things I can think of and feel that I want to grow and expand in the new year.  I then burn each paper in separate dishes or shells, making sure all pieces are turned to ashes.  Then, when cooled, I put them into separate envelopes or containers (film canister, Ziploc baggie, etc.) and mark “to shed” and “to grow” on the container.   Around 5 minutes before midnight, I start visualizing all the things on the “to shed” list, and see them slip away, see them blown away and washed away, out of my energy field, out of my life and  out of my reality.  I go out side and pour the “to shed” ashes into my hand and let the wind scatter the ashes away and release them and all they re present, as the old year fades away.
After midnight, after blessing the new year, with the second container  “to grow”,  I visualize all of these goals, desires, etc. coming to fruition, to this level of reality.  I bring that envelope down to the garden, and with a stick dig a small hole, then plant these ashes in the earth, near a tree or in a special place, (for those in apartments, I encourage them to use their favorite houseplant).  The ashes are a reminder of the life cycle, the power of nature and the honoring of Mother Earth, that these seeds of hopes and dreams are nurtured into reality, in the coming year.   This is a ritual that I’ve shared with many people, and even had a group in Ireland do it one New Years!  You may want to try this and tweak it and do it a way that suits you.
Leave us a message to let us know how this process worked out for you.
Go in peace.
